Let me begin this by saying how much I appreciate your patience and flexibility as we have tried to make Solo and Ensemble work the year. It is a terrific event that I believe in for kids, and something that we should work on each and every year.
Three times in my 24 years before this one OMEA has canceled the Solo and Ensemble event because of inclement weather (1997, 2003, and 2007), and in 1995 it was deemed unsafe by Lebanon City Schools to attend because of potential of bad weather, even though the event was held by OMEA. (That year it was held at Miami University, the day it snowed 4 inches between noon and 1 pm!)
This year we had this misfortune of having our event snowed out, but the students seemed genuinely interested in trying to still have it happen. About 10 days ago our accompanist informed us that she could not attend the event, which left me scrambling for a piano player for the kids. I was told by a colleague that he may be able to provide someone to take her place but that fell through this morning.
It is with this in mind, as well as with students having many things they could be working on in it's place (new music in class, new music with private teachers, outside ensembles working towards the ends of their seasons, etc) that we should put this event aside. So, it is with a heavy heart that I announce we will be canceling the Solo and Ensemble event for this year. However, if your students were looking forward to performing we can discuss the possibility of them playing at our end of the year concert our at our awards banquet, both of which I am looking to make big, exciting events.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks again for your flexibility and understanding.
